We all know the importance of brushing, flossing, and routine dental care, but believe it or not, what you’re drinking throughout the day can also play a huge role in your dental wellness. Many popular drinks may taste refreshing or provide you with the energizing jolt you need to conquer your day, but they can cause all kinds of issues for your teeth. The good news is that there are many tooth-friendly alternatives that can keep you smiling brightly! Here’s what you need to know.
Popular Drinks That Can Damage Your Teeth
Though they may be marketed as delicious, fun, and refreshing, these kinds of drinks often don’t have your dental health in mind and can cause various kinds of issues:
Soda
Soda is one of the biggest offenders. Both regular and diet sodas are highly acidic, and the copious amounts of sugar found in them can feed on the harmful bacteria in your mouth, while acids erode enamel, or the protective layer on your teeth. Over time, this can lead to cavities and other issues.
Sports and Energy Drinks
These are often labeled as “healthy” since they can boost energy or help replenish electrolytes, but the truth is, many are loaded with sugar and acids. In fact, studies show they can erode tooth enamel even faster than soda!
Coffee & Tea
While a morning cup of coffee or tea can help you start your day, both are known for staining teeth. Sweetened versions add another layer of risk, providing more fuel for cavity-causing bacteria.
Alcoholic Beverages
Wine, beer, and mixed drinks often contain sugars and acids that harm enamel. Alcohol also dries out your mouth, reducing your amount of saliva—which is your body’s first line of defense against cavities.
Tooth-Friendly Alternatives
Fortunately, protecting your teeth doesn’t mean you have to give up all of your favorite drinks. While it’s wise to eliminate unhealthy options altogether, even showing moderation can make a difference, as can rinsing your mouth out with water after enjoying one. That said, some tooth-friendly alternatives you can also consider include:
- Water (the best choice) – Water keeps you hydrated, rinses away bacteria and food debris, and supports saliva production. It will also never stain your teeth!
- Milk – Rich in calcium and phosphorus, both of which benefit your teeth, milk is a great, low-sugar choice for strengthening teeth.
- Herbal teas – Naturally caffeine-free and available in many flavors, herbal teas are less likely to stain and don’t harm enamel.
- Infused water – You can try adding slices of cucumber, mint, or berries to water for added flavor without any of the extra sugar or acids.
- Diluted juice – If you love fruit juice, try mixing it with water to cut down on sugar and acidity.
Your smile deserves protection both in and out of the dental office—and what you drink daily can play a large part in your dental health. The next time you head to the fridge or order a beverage at a restaurant, be sure to choose one that’s good for your teeth!
