Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Our team may recommend one or more tooth extractions if:
- A tooth has experienced significant damage or decay, and it cannot be repaired with a filling, crown, or other restorative service.
- It is necessary to make more room in your mouth for dentures or orthodontia.
- A child’s primary tooth did not fall out on time, and removing it will help proper development of the adult teeth.
- A tooth is impacted (stuck fully or partially beneath the gumline)
- A tooth is infected, and removing it is the best way to prevent the infection from spreading into nearby tissues.
The Process of Removing a Tooth

While many patients may believe that tooth extractions are painful, our office aims to ensure comfort during treatment. Not only will we numb the area around the tooth, but we may also administer sedation in certain cases.
The extraction process itself is usually fairly simple. First, we lift the tooth with an instrument called an elevator. Then, we grip it with forceps and wiggle it back and forth in order to break the connective tissues holding it in place. Once it is free, we clean the socket and place gauze to control bleeding.
If a tooth is impacted, you might need to undergo a surgical extraction. We sometimes refer patients to specialists for removal of impacted teeth.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Most patients return to feeling normal within 1 – 2 weeks of an extraction procedure. In the meantime, there are some practical steps you should take to reduce your discomfort and lower your risk of complications:
- Take any medications as prescribed by our team.
- After the first 24 hours, start rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not drink through a straw.
- Do not engage in strenuous exercise.
- Keep your head propped up on pillows while sleeping.
- Get enough rest.
Also, keep in mind that you should attend all recommended follow-ups with our team. We strongly advise timely tooth replacement in order to prevent future oral health complications, such as additional tooth loss, a misaligned bite, and feelings of self-consciousness about an incomplete smile.
