4 Tips for Avoiding Dental Accidents, Mishaps, and Emergencies

Category: Dental Emergency

If you ever experience a dental emergency, it’s nice to know that your dentist will be ready to provide prompt treatment and quick pain relief. But you’d probably prefer to avoid them altogether if at all possible! Fortunately, your dentist can help with this too. These four dentist-approved preventative care tips will help you avoid dental accidents, mishaps, and emergencies.

1. Brush and Floss Your Teeth

The absolute best thing you can do to protect your smile is maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine. Harmful bacteria build up in your mouth during the day and while you sleep, and can lead to cavities, gum disease, and infection if not managed. To keep your mouth clean and hygienic, brush your teeth twice daily with a soft bristled toothbrush, and be sure to floss at least once per day.

2. Get a Custom Mouthguard

If you play sports, you’re probably aware of how quickly you can lose a tooth! Dental damage also isn’t uncommon if you prefer intense or high-contact workouts. But did you know you could also be wearing down your pearly whites by grinding or clenching them in your sleep? In both instances, your dentist can provide you with a customized mouthguard to cushion impacts and preserve your smile.

3. Use the Proper Tools – Not Your Teeth

Plenty of people have tried to open a package or bottlecap with their teeth at least once. But hopefully you didn’t make a second attempt! Using your pearly whites as tools is a notorious way to break or chip your smile. Even if you don’t end up with visible damage, doing this frequently will wear down your enamel over time. Stick to using the tools that were designed to open things, and you’ll be less likely to experience a dental emergency.

4. Take Care of Oral Issues Promptly

Unlike other parts of your body, your teeth can’t repair themselves or fight off infection. Puffy, bleeding gums one day can very well become a severe case of gum disease later. If you notice any abnormal symptoms, it’s important to have your dentist check on your mouth as soon as possible!

While you may not be able to completely prevent dental emergencies, you can certainly reduce your risk of experiencing one by taking preventative care measures. Follow these tips to avoid dental disasters, and don’t hesitate to ask your dentist for more advice!
